This particular project was brought to us by bathroom pod manufacturer, Modular Systems, in August 2017. The design and concept was developed over a number of months and Roman were contracted to supply products for 40 of the hotel’s bathrooms.
The Hotel Design
Designed by Squid Inc – the name Brooklyn was inspired by the New York Borough and chosen for its resonating similarities to Manchester, in terms of its buzzing industrial growth, as well as its strength of identity and culture. The 189-room hotel pays homage to Brooklyn’s history from the early 20th century to the present day – and is ranked in the top 20 “Hottest New Hotels in the World”.
The Bathroom Suites
Hotel Brooklyn’s bathrooms are cleverly-angled to allow the back walls and semi opaque windows to look across the bedroom, while street art features finish off the bold design direction. Bathroom amenities include organic bamboo toothbrushes and ethically sourced toothpaste, green soap and lotion dispensers with minimum waste.
The Project Spec
The design of the bathrooms was a very unique shape so the product design had to reflect this in order to fulfil the bathroom pod specification requirements.
The cut out in the glass was a design requirement specified by Modular Systems’ client. The thought process behind this niche idea was to allow guests to turn the shower on without having to step inside the enclosure. It was a design solution requirement due to the location of the valve/tap and the shower head which worked out very successfully with a very high standard visual finish. This also enabled guests to warm the shower enclosure prior to entering.
Our R&D team created the vision using our Liberty design, hardware, bespoke glass and a bespoke towel rail. We also supplied the solid surface cistern housing and vanity top.
Paul Hyde, International Specification Director of Roman commented: “We’d previously worked on the hotel’s sister property Hotel Gotham in Manchester and it was a pleasure to work with a company as prestigious as Bespoke Hotels, an amazing design and construction team and fantastic implementation via Modular Systems”.
“We are thrilled to have secured this fantastic site in the heart of Manchester’s historic industrial thoroughfare of Portland Street”, commented Robin Sheppard, Chairman of Bespoke Hotels. “We believe Hotel Brooklyn is a perfect fit for Manchester, not solely in terms of the architectural grandeur and convenience of its location, but the abundant character and feistiness of the city. Portland Street is experiencing a regeneration as the hotel strip of the city”.
